HOW TO PRESERVE YOUR SHOES

Where are your shoes when they're not on your feet? Where you keep them is a factor in how long they will last.

Storage.
Organize your closet so that you have a place for your shoes, whether it's a shoe rack or just a place on the floor.
Don't pile the shoes on top of each other as that might leave dirt or marks on your shoes.
Don't rest things on top of your shoes or rest shoes on their tops. This avoids crushing them.

Maintenance.
If you get your shoes wet, let them dry slowly in an area where there's good air flow. Never put your shoes on a furnace register or heater to dry. This will shrink the leather, loosen the bonding material and put them at risk for cracking, peeling and discoloration.
Keep shoes out of sunlight and away from heat sources when you're not wearing them.
Allow your shoes some time to recuperate.

Clean or Polish Your Shoes Regularly.

Obviously, the methods used will depend upon the material, but keeping everything polished and clean will obviously help to extend the life of your footwear. This can be done by the following ways:
  • Clean the shoes with a dampened cloth.
  • Apply any good polish of your choice using small circular motions.
  • Allow the polish to dry and add additional layers, if necessary.
  • Brush off the excess polish.
  • Buff the shoes with a soft cloth in order to add shine to your shoes.
Avoid Stepping in Dirt.
Keep your shoes away from mud, wet grass, and water puddies as that might make your ahoes dirtier and reduce their lives.

Use of a Shoehorn.

A shoehorn is a curved instrument used for easing one's heel into a shoe. It helps protect the back of your shoes as you slide your foot in, maintaining its shape and fit.
Whether you have trouble putting on your shoes or don't want to ruin the back of your shoes (the shoes' counter), using a shoe horn is a must. It prevents straining your lower body and saves your shoes. N.B: Don't walk on the heels of your shoes. Lace and unlace your shoes when you put them on and take them off that is if your shoes have laces.

Apply Waterproofing.

If you know you will be out in your shoes in snow or rain, apply a suitable waterproofing agent periodically. A good shoe store can recommend an appropriate product. To weatherproof your shoes, we suggest a non-silicone spray or a rain/stain repellant.

Don't Drag Your Feet.

There's no sense wearing out the soles of your shoes any faster than necessary, so pick up your feet when you walk.

Use Older Shoes for Dirty or Damaging Task.

Keep last year's sneakers for this year's gardening, painting, or walking on rough surfaces or gravel. You'll get a little more use out of the older shoes and spare the newer shoes premature damage.
